Bob Clark

Biography

Dr. Clifton (Bob) Clark received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the University of Arkansas and his PhD in Physics from the University of Maryland. From 1951-1957 he was an Instructor in Physics at the US Naval Academy. He then taught as a faculty member at Southern Methodist University before coming to UNCG in 1965, where he was brought on as Physics Department Head to build up the department and was fundamental in developing the Physics Masters program. He remained head of the Physics and Astronomy Department for 10 years and received the Alumni Teaching Excellence Award (1982-1983). His work specialized in lattice dynamics in crystals in solid state physics. In 1991, Dr. Clark became the 1st Faculty Senate Chair and he also served two terms as Vice Chairman of the Faculty Assembly. He continued teaching at UNCG until his retirement in 1994 becoming Professor Emeritus. In 1997, Dr. Clark received the Distinguished Service Citation Award from the American Association of Physics Teachers and was also instrumental in leadership roles of the Southeastern Section of the American Physical Society (SESPAS). Dr. Clark died on March 12, 2019.
